As the increasing need for recycling in the demolition industry has grown, more intense pressure is put on demolition sites to insure that materials are sorted, and properly recycled. The use of a portable crusher is very beneficial. The portable crusher is brought right to a project site, that has a concrete and/or asphalt pile, and is used to crush concrete and/or asphalt materials in to a material that will be prepared later for use as a base material. The crushed materials will be left at the project site for the owners to use at their own discretion. The operation is handled 100% by crews that have been assigned the task of this project. The crews are well trained and work with and on this equipment everyday.
The operation of crushing requires that feedstock pile be put into the crushing unit. This pile will be prepared concrete and/or asphalt that have been placed into a large pile that has been material sized & trimmed for this particular operation. The crushing unit is placed within close proximity to the feedstock pile and will take a full day or more to be completely set up. During the set up, all employees not directly involved with this set up, need to stay clear of the area and allow the trained crew to complete their work.
The setting up of crushing equipment includes the use of a conveyor system that will move the finished crushed materials to a designated location.
All personnel working around the crushing unit need to know the basics of the operation. The crushing unit is fed concrete and/or asphalt material from a feedstock pile via front-end loader. Once the material is fed into the crusher, it will move along a MAG Belt. This conveyor belt is very specific to the crushing unit and plays a key role in the removal of all of the metal materials that is embedded in the concrete material. During the sizing process, the MAG Belt is used to grab the metal away from the broken concrete and literally fling the metal to a pile directly next to the crushing unit.
The finished materials, which are deposited on the project site, are stockpiled in a cone shaped pile that can reach significant heights.
Overall, the crushing of concrete and asphalt is a very specific operation. The people, who work with and on this equipment, are very well trained on their required duties. Insuring that everyone is well trained and very informed will help to insure a safe and satisfactory completion to a crushing projects operation.
